Dr. Verkerke is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Integrative Biology & Physiology. His background is in physiology, metabolism, and bioenergetics.
Research Summary
The Verkerke Lab aims to identify metabolic vulnerabilities that can be leveraged to provide innovative therapeutic strategies. We apply metabolic and bioenergetic techniques to model systems to investigate how metabolic pathways are rewired in pathophysiology. Current projects center on mitochondrial choline transport and its role in cellular metabolism, aiming to understand how disruptions in this axis contribute to disease progression and to identify novel targets for therapeutic intervention.
